We also have good news for our Egyptian fanatics as our lecture programme opens with 'Howard Carter: The Rebel Who Found A Cause' which will be presented by one of the world's best known Egyptologists Dr. Jaromir Malek on 14 April. Dr. Jaromir Malek is the Keeper of the Archive at the Griffith Institute in Oxford, which includes the important Tutankhamun archive of photographs and notes made at the time of the discovery of the king's tomb. He is the author of many books on Tutankhamun and on ancient Egyptian art.
LECTURE DETAILS: Howard Carter: The rebel who found a cause
Howard Carter's discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 made him one of the best known archaeologists working in Egypt. But the path leading to such a magnificent achievement and the years of hard work in the tomb which followed were fraught with difficulties. Carter was a man who came from a very ordinary background, had little in the way of formal education and no specialized training in Egyptology. He was very fortunate in many respects but also very unlucky in others. The pressure under which he worked emphasized some of the less attractive features of his character but also brought to light some of his most admirable characteristics. Biographers are still finding it difficult to understand him fully.
Guided Tours for the Deaf

The Irish Deaf Society (IDS) is the national representative organisation of Deaf and hard of hearing people, serving the interest and welfare of the Deaf community.
The Irish Deaf Society, wants to see a society where Deaf people have full and unrestricted access to all walks of life thus becoming equal citizens, contributing and participating freely. The IDS represents the Irish Deaf community on an international level through its membership of the World Federation of the Deaf and the European Union of the Deaf.
The Irish Deaf Society also upholds the status of Irish Sign Language (ISL), which is the first and preferred language of Deaf people in Ireland. The IDS took a huge leap in this direction in 2006 with the establishment of the ISL Academy. The ISL Academy can achieve this by taking a lead in building partnerships, promoting Irish Sign Language and targeting resources.
The Irish Deaf Society has seen major cuts in funding and now more than ever needs your support. Your donation no matter how small help us continue our work, we are also very grateful for those who volunteer their time. With your support we will continue supporting the Deaf community throughout Ireland. Volunteers who would like to help with the fundraising night at the Tutankhamun exhibition or have fundraising ideas for the Irish Deaf Society should contact funds@irishdeafsociety.ie

LECTURE DETAILS:
Howard Carter: The rebel who found a cause
Howard Carter became famous for his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. But he was far from being an orthodox academic.
He never went to university and did not have any formal training in Egyptology. What he knew he learnt on the job. He was a man of strong opinions and principles, and his reactions to events were sometimes rather unexpected.
He was willing to rebel in support of his Egyptian workmen and his relations with the British academic establishment were somewhat strained. He quarrelled with the authorities in charge of antiquities as well as with his colleagues. Yet he was a man who felt deeply responsible for the tomb which he discovered and was determined to complete its documentation against all odds. For this he deserves our admiration.

A Journey Through Time to the Mysterious World of Ancient Egypt
The archaeologist Howard Carter opened the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun for the first time on 26 November 1922. He was overwhelmed by the treasures that met his eyes. Four chambers lay before him, some of them filled to the roof with funerary objects of immeasurable value, destined to accompany the dead king on his journey into the hereafter: jewellery, cult objects, amulets, coffers, chairs, weapons, musical instruments and insignia of power. These were all fashioned with the art of master craftsmen from the most beautiful materials such as ebony, alabaster, precious stones – and most of all, gold. And in the midst of all this boundless magnificence, the culmination: the burial chamber covered with murals on all sides, containing the sarcophagus of the Pharaoh, his mummy covered with a death mask which in its beauty and grandeur surpassed anything ever seen before. The exhibition allows visitors to experience the wonder of this moment with all of their senses - to walk into an overwhelming treasure chamber, to discover a world and its wonders long thought to be lost. The fascination of the vanished ancient civilisation on the Nile is conjured up again through modern technology.
The Tomb and the Treasures over 2,500 Square Metres
Three of Tutankhamun's tomb chambers have been reconstructed true to the originals and their dimensions, so that visitors receive an authentic impression of the space. Over 1,000 replicas of the most important objects, fashioned by the best Egyptian craftsmen, can be admired there. The information about the culture and spiritual world of the ancient Egyptians - their funerary cult, their gods, their dynasties, their mysterious hieroglyphic script - has been prepared and presented with state-of-the-art multimedia technology. The centrepiece is of course Tutankhamun. Eighty-eight years after its discovery, the tomb of Tutankhamun is opened once more - and you can be there!
Over 1,700,000 visitors have seen
TUTANKHAMUN - HIS TOMB AND HIS TREASURES...
...in Zurich, Brno, Munich, Hamburg, Barcelona, Budapest and Madrid. Now, the tombs are opened to Irish visitors for the first time, at the RDS Industries Hall, Ballsbridge, Co. Dublin.
